Audit Enjoy your flight time

The purpose of a logbook in flight training should be to quantify progress against targets and flag areas that need attention. If your training is effective and your instructor is accountable, you should be hitting your targets within the promised timeframe. If your training is inefficient and your instructor is not leading your progress, you will reach your targets within unreasonable timeframes and spending—if you reach them at all.

So, what are the targets? You should know them. Before enrolling in any flight training program, take the time to review the syllabus, curriculum, or lesson structure. Lesson by lesson, instructors are responsible for delivering on the learning and experience objectives.

A lack of curriculum is a red flag, and we wouldn’t even consider such instructors. If an instructor fails to accomplish the lesson objectives, take that as a warning sign to prevent yourself from persisting in the wrong direction.

After each training flight, ask yourself and/or your instructor:

  • Did you accomplish all objectives?
  • What obstacles did you encounter?
  • What contributed to your success?

What have you learned that may alter your approach to the next training session? Auditing your time is a proactive way to use your resources efficiently—allowing you to invest your time, money, and energy in continuous improvement. Just imagine what you want to do next: aerobatics, tailwheel, gliders, seaplanes, skis, helicopters…

A logbook filled with junk entries doesn’t count. Diversity is key. Get real flight time and enjoy all of your flights.
